New York, NY Calico Wallpaper introduces two new collections entitled ‘Prima’ and ‘Sway,’ designed in-house by Creative Director and Co-Founder Rachel Cope. Emulating the meditative properties of nature through its watercolor medium, both collections feature painterly interpretations of branches that bring forth a serene sense of motion into any interior.

“When creating these collections, I wanted to bring the serenity of the outside to inside environments,” explains Rachel Cope. “Using water-based paint provided an additional connection to nature, transforming the compositions to have a calming presence. The intention behind Prima and Sway really comes through in the colors I chose, each pulling from natural elements.”

Prima reflects an early moment of botanical form: when light, shadow, and structure first take shape. Rendered in wet-on-wet monochrome watercolor, the design manifests the medium’s versatility through fluid washes and decisive gestures. Insinuating foliage viewed through a blurred lens, the composition invites a glimpse of depth and movement without overt representation. Prima offers a fresh portrayal of nature, where each mark feels intentional yet unforced across the canvas.

Sway collection in process

Sway explores the gentle rhythm of branches in the breeze through watercolor, woven into tactile beauty. Painted with diluted strokes and layered washes, the design suggests the natural arc and suspension of willow branches as they respond to air and light. Lines elongate and overlap, providing an atmospheric dimensionality, while variations in tone provide a refreshing composition. Sway alludes to refined motion, defined by restraint, movement, and material presence.

Together, Prima and Sway utilize the luminosity of watercolor to express the duality between art and nature. Printed on woven sisal, the material adds a subtle texture that enhances the artwork’s organic essence and tonal variation.

Prima is available in seven colorways: Basil, Blur, Focus, Halcyon, Mistline, Rain, and Russet; Sway is also available in seven colorways: Aureline, Bower, Bramble, Glade, Liminal, Reed, and Veer.
