Calico Wallpaper Introduces Perception & Nuance, A Bespoke Wallpaper Collection In Collaboration With Colin King
Perception and Nuance Explore the Intricate Layers of the Past to Create a Timeless Collection for the Present
Calico Wallpaper launches two new collections Nuance and Perception, created in collaboration with interior stylist, Colin King. Through King and Calico Wallpaper’s ideation, Perception and Nuance explore the subtle layers of the past to create a timeless collection for the present.
King, who is frequently inspired by the past, looked to generations of color that span centuries, evoking frescos and texture for influence. Perception exemplifies the weathered charm of past epochs, rooted in a muted but grounded palate borrowed from yesterday while staying rooted in today. Layers of markings and meaning bring Perception to life, with the absence of past traditions defining a new reality of moments and memories. Perception depicts torn edges and faded plasters, graceful yet salvaged surfaces with different stories to tell, with a nod to what came before.
Nuance is an expression of benign neglect that has worked its subtle magic. The collection pulls inspiration from King’s past, reflecting on his time as a dancer through a divided interplay, a waltz between texture and hue. Nuance picks and plays upon a duality of left-over interventions, separated narrowly by a subtle horizon line. Through each imperfection and stripped-away material, details come even more into focus, more into the present, revealing the opportunity to be part of an era-spanning narrative. Nuance is a testament to years of occupation and the ravages of time.
"I've always been captivated by the beauty of patina, the transformation that unfolds as objects age and decay. It’s as if objects reveal their inner truth. It’s a unique quality seen in works of art and architecture affected by the passage of time,” says King on the collection. “The untouched and unrestored have a character and warmth, an effect that feels deliberately incomplete—magnificently imperfect. At the heart of it all are subtleties and nuances that bring depth and richness to the design."
Nuance is available in eight colorways, Memory, Reminiscence, Restore, Resurface, Threads, Unravel, Compel, and Duet; while Perception is offered in colorways Anecdote, Granulate, Intrinsic, Patina, Sift, Stripped, Unfinished, and Untouched. As with all Calico Wallpaper collections, Nuance and Perception were born from original artwork. Calico Wallpaper employs advanced technologies to translate the designs to be utilized for their new ordering system, Panorama. This streamlined process maintains the custom nature that the brand is known for allowing for a more efficient ordering process to reduce lead-time to as little as four weeks. Starting April 2024, Nuance and Perception will be available for sample orders and purchase through www.calicowallpaper.com.
