Calico Wallpaper Introduces Evoke and Ensemble, Two Immersive Wallpaper Collections that Celebrate Unrestrained Expression

Evoke and Ensemble Explore the Joyful Possibilities of One’s Inner Child

New York, NY (October 15, 2024) Calico Wallpaper launches two new collections, Evoke and Ensemble, designed in-house by Creative Director and Co-Founder, Rachel Cope. Each expresses a childlike playfulness into living spaces, inspiring creativity and imagination.

Inspired by the work of Swiss-German artist Paul Klee, Evoke is influenced by Expressionism, Cubism and Surrealism. Once quoted as saying, “The painter should not paint what he sees, but what will be seen”, Klee’s words perfectly speak to this collection as a true appeal to the imagination. To create the design, washes of color were painted on watercolor paper and then overlaid to create geometric forms. When viewing the wallpaper one’s mind becomes immersed, and fantastic buildings and landscapes begin to appear through the shifts in color that make up these shapes.

Similarly, Ensemble is a celebration of creativity, inspired by the boundless imagination of a child. This collection features a bold design comprised of dynamic paintbrush strokes and vibrant colors, showcasing an emblem of spontaneity. The use of contrasting hues and unexpected color combinations add a touch of playful sophistication and whimsy. When first imagining Ensemble, Cope was inspired by the impasto painting technique, which consists of laying pigment on thickly so that it stands out from the canvas. The thick paint creates a pastose surface that gives the artwork dimension, making it appear as if the paint is coming off of the canvas. The result seen in this collection is a design with a variety of textures that create a rich, layered effect that brings the walls to life.

“I found such joy in the process of creating both Evoke and Ensemble, connecting with my inner child and being uninhibited in my designs,” says Rachel Cope, Creative Director and Co-Founder of Calico Wallpaper.  “It was so gratifying for me as an artist when I first started painting my initial ideas for these collections. My process began with how I wanted these collections to make people feel, and in pursuit of whimsy and creativity, Evoke and Ensemble both came to life. These collections are a tribute to the beauty of unrestrained expression.”
